Now with the World Cup over,
my following posts will still be revolving around sports. I will be talking about the inaugural Youth Olympic Games that is going to be held in Singapore! The Youth Olympic Torch went by my school yesterday, and this is the main reason why I am talking about this today. Even though it was quite a big deal, the Youth Olympic Torch went by my school quite disappointingly. Firstly, the whole school suspended lessons in the morning for this event. Secondly, everyone was waiting for it along the driveway for a very long time, and we got quite restless quickly. Thirdly, we were expecting something more spectacular than someone holding on to a container with a tiny flame in it, maybe a torch on fire? Yes, I saw the torch, someone else was holding it but it was not lit. When the torch actually passed us, our spirits were already dampened, and a few cheered only. I would not blame the torch bearers that they were using a container, as it was probably because of the rain in the morning, (I guess?) Soon after, five planes flew over our school in formation, bulky but slow enough for us to enjoy it, it was either an old model or just cargo planes. Everyone cheered it, possibly louder than for the torch. I didn't realise the significance of it until I heard that three out of five of the airplanes were driven by Hwa Chong students from the Youth Flying Club! Wow! I've been keeping a lookout for volunteering opportunities, but sadly it was only open to polytechnics, ITE, universities students or adult individuals. Well, this will be the end of my post today, I will dig up some background informations of the YOG and post some updates on it. with 0 comments

We had our National Day celebrations today and the atmosphere there was very high!
As part of the organising team for the event, I am very satisfied with the eager participation of the audience or students during the concert. It was a great success, although some aspects of the concert were rushed out. We decided to distribute facepaint and tattoos among the students to hype up the students. This idea is immediately endorsed by Mr Low, our director of consortium. Face-friendly facepaint was bought immediately for the occasion. This morning, we waited outside the hall to distribute the facepaint. In order to encourage the students to don the tattoos and facepaint, the organising team members were to set the ball rolling by putting facepaint on themselves. Photo courtesy of Ye Yixin Maybe still in the World Cup mood, some secondary four students brought vuvuzelas that day, around 10 in total. I heard from my seniors that it was meant to boo any poor performances, but I do not recall hearing them sound. Vuvuzelas are basically a plastic tube which produces a huge amount of humming sound when blown, and each one costs fifty dollars, according to the seniors. Vuvuzelas were used in the Fifa World Cup 2010 partly because it is in Africa, as it was used during soccer matches there. Regarding the upcoming Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, I heard rumours of imported vuvuzelas of the youth olympic theme. However, vuvuzelas are banned in the Youth Olympic Games.

I am back from Penang!
The World Cup atmosphere in Penang is clearly visible. Everyone was very excited about the Finals between Spain and Netherlands, with both teams reaching the Finals for the first time, they had great potential for a great match. In my school, the council pushed for pushing back the lessons by a few hours so that we can watch the Finals in peace, and be able to wake up on time for school the next day. The participants there, from all over Asia, we all were excited about the match, talking about it all day long and planning to watch it together at someone's hotel room. We bought Red Bull and coffee for the adrenaline boost to last us the whole match, forgetting to make the point to wake up on time the next day. We had different means to stay awake that night, playing card games, and an alarm in case we fell asleep in the middle of the game. Some of us woke up on time, people start entering the room to watch the match, together. The first half of the match was very mundane as the two teams plainly tackled the other whenever they lose the ball. There were many fouls. For the second half I was unconscious, but I heard Spain won with a single goal in the last minute, not exactly a glorious victory. Some friends complained that the match between Germany and Uruguay was much more like a Finals match, which is quite true.

The World Cup fever is global!
I was on holidays in China and I found out that screening of world cup matches are totally free and live on their local tv stations like CCTV. CCTV opened a online streaming site which allows the people to watch the matches online as well. When I tried to access it in Singapore, access was unfortunately denied and they claimed that it was only opened to people accessing the net from China. The newspaper in China had many articles on the World Cup, with a time table of the matches, stating the date and time of the match and on which channel can you catch them. I watched a few matches during my stay in China. Well, the Finals are approaching! Some results along the way were quite surprising, with some teams making substantial improvements from their last World Cup in 2006, their standards raised so alarmingly! These teams include Uruguay, Netherlands and Paraguay. Many were in total shock when they witness how Netherlands denied Brazil their entry into the Semi-Finals. Brazil lost their cool when the opposing team scored their first goal, where a defender made a mistake to challenge the ball with the goalkeeper. The first goal was counted as an own goal by the defender, while Robben was the one who lobbed in the ball. The Brazilians panicked and lost another goal, for which they will have to say goodbye to the World Cup. Personally, my favourite team was Germany, who had always been a power house in international soccer. I admire their style of play, which is flexible and steady. They proved their power by defeating Argentina, whom many thought had a chance for the champions. It was no ordinary victory, it was an overwhelming, all out victory of 4-0. England was also a well-known team, who had an interesting journey out of the World Cup. They supposedly scored a goal against Germany in the Round of 16, but was not spotted by the assistant referee, as the ball bounced out after crossing the line. This goal could have been an equaliser for them which will boost their morale before half time. David James was the goalkeeper for this match, after Robert Green was substituted out of the team after his tragic mistake of letting a harmless ball into the net. I will be going to Penang next week for the Inaugural Chung Ling International Camp, probably will miss the Finals.

The FIFA World Cup started off with a draw between Mexico and the host team, South Africa.
This match was broad-casted for free in Singapore on Channel 5. Singapore telecoms, Singtel and Starhub, managed to secure a contract with the World Cup officials together for the football fans in Singapore, but it came with a great cost. The plan was nearly $90 for live telecast of all the World Cup matches. They commented that it was a reasonable price, a dollar for each match, just like buying a cup of coffee for each. The hardy Singapore football fans, despite of the cost, flocked to subscribe with the telecoms for the matches to be screened live on their TV screen. Others are resorting to online streaming of the matches, which I would say is not perfectly legal. Personally, I feel that the subscription fee is a little overpriced, but I am not that into watching football. But it is forgivable as the telecoms worked really hard to enable the matches to be screened live in Singapore. Well, for the first match, I caught it on television and I found it quite a thrill to watch it with so many football fans all over the world, discussing about the match with friends on MSN at the same time. I wouldn't say that it was a quite mundane match, considering that the two opposing teams were not all that hot shot such as Brazil and Argentina. And especially when it ended with a 1-1 draw. At least, we got a preview of what was to come in the following month.

They unloaded the dead and maimed right before our eyes
Task 1 Background This poem basically talks about the war in Afghanistan, more specifically Hindu Kush, as mentioned in the poem. The conflict in Afghanistan started after the September 11 attack, the most devastating terrorist act in American History, killing around 3,000 people. The Al-Qaeda was confirmed to be responsible for this act of terror after the hijackers of the airplanes were identified to be linked to the Al-Qaeda. In the aftermath of the disaster, the US Government decided to respond militarily to terrorism, and readied its armed forces to strike the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, which was suspected to harbour the Al-Qaeda. This act of counter-terrorism is called the Operation of Enduring Freedom, which was launched along with the British Military in October 2001 in response to the September 11 attacks. President Bush said: "This crusade, this war on terrorism, is going to take a while." The aim of this operation is to capture high-ranking Al-Qaeda leaders and destroy the organisation with the Taliban regime which supported it. There were many strikes and protests against this operation against terrorism, which was once again energized by current US President Obama's decision to send in 30,000 US troops in the hope of ending the campaign there faster. The conflict lasted until now... Al-Qaeda's presence in the Hindu Kush mountain ranges made the US forces shift their operations there. The combat over there is basically desert warfare. The terrain there is rugged and have many mountain ranges. Primary transport there are jeeps and helicopters. References: Task 2 (1) Point of View The point of view presented in this poem is of a soldier, or of the poet himself. The evidence is that the poet used words like "our", "we", "I" and "my". These words show that the poet is describing how they were feeling and what they were doing. It was also shown that they are soldiers as in line 27, it wrote "Everyone loses their innocence when they carry guns". Soldiers are always illustrated as people in uniform, carrying guns. (2) Situation/Setting Words like "LZ"(Landing Zone) and "bird"(Slang for helicopter) suggests that the situation of the poem was that the soldiers were getting off from a helicopter. The situation was also very tense and "hot", as there are bullets flying every where and the poet himself might get shot or killed easily. The evidence that bullets are flying every where is the "through the lead rain", and that one can be easily killed are "The only reason I survived that day was divine" and "when I get to heaven" The soldiers were seen fighting through mountains and valleys at the Hindu Kush mountain ranges, evidence are "from valleys to mountain peaks", "majestic mountains", "up the mountains" and "Hindu Kush". (3) Language Diction Rhyme scheme was used in this poem as AABBCCDD... ... right before our eyes (A) ... took to the skies (A) ... valleys we flew (B) ... we had not a clue (B) and so on... (4) Personal Response I feel that this poem is well-written, as it clearly brought out the terrors of combat, war. It also introduced many slangs used by the soldiers, like "bird" and "Lock N Load". This poem suggests that as long as you went to Afghanistan to fight, you are nothing but a man who is going to die fighting for his country, no way to define you as "good" or "bad". You are nothing but a lost son of your parents. He suggested that the battlefield is hell, which more or less, I agree to a certain extent. But he mentioned a little something gained from war, the brotherhood that exists in between the soldiers, after fighting alongside one another. But this sounded like brotherhood that was out of desperation, when they were all reduced to nothing. with 0 comments

In this post I will talk about the History of the Fifa World Cup,
I think that the history of the fifa world cup is very interesting, as it was interrupted by World War II and there are many interesting events in between, and changes in the format of the competition. Firstly, Fédération Internationale de Football Association was founded in 1904 by Robert Guerin, when football started to increase in popularity in the 20th, there was a need for a single body to oversee the worldwide sport so that matches can be held in international levels. Formed in Paris, it is a French organisation their headquarters are currently in Switzerland, and until now, they retained their French name, and their initial acronym. FIFA held a few insignificant competitions after their founding, before Jules Rimet, the 3rd president of FIFA, decided to have their own internation tournament. The First World Cup was promptly held in 1930, with Uruguay as the host. After some more research on the World Cup Trophies, I realised that the Jules Rimet Trohpy will be awarded permanently to any nation that won the World Cup 3 times first, and this nation is Brazil. The World Cup will be kept by the winning nation until the next tournament. An interesting thing happened to the trophy during World War II. During the World War, the 1938 winners, Italy, held on to the cup. The vice-president of FIFA and the president of Italian Football Federation secretly transported the cup from a Roman Bank and hid it in a shoe-box under his bed to prevent the Nazis from taking it. The trophy was stolen before the 1960 World Cup in England while on exhibition, but was found seven days later in at the bottom of a suburban garden hedge in South London. The Brazilian team won the World Cup for the third time in 1970, allowing them to keep the Cup permanently. The Cup was then stolen again in 1983, and was never recovered.
